REVIEWSAlbert Hammond Jr., ‘¿Cómo Te Llama?’

7
¿Cómo Te Llama?
Critical Mass
Label: Black Seal

by Josh Modell

Julian Casablancas gets most of the Strokes' songwriting glory, but Albert Hammond Jr. is almost trumping him in quantity. ¿ Cómo Te Llama? is the guitarist's second solo disc since his main band went on hiatus, and it's another solid collection that echoes his day job from an artful distance. Jangly guitars remain, though urgent agitation is replaced by loping reggae-rock ("Borrowed Time"), an audition for soundtrack work (the instrumental "Spooky Couch"), and a couple of convincing stabs at Guided by Voices–style indie rock ("Boss Americana"). Is it Is This It? No, but it'll do.
