Screaming Females, 'Power Move' (Don Giovanni)

Jersey girl becomes DIY punk's guitar hero.

The center of this Garden State trio, diminutive Marissa Paternoster is a Punky Van Halen in thrift-store coats who rips through spiky guitar solos unlike anybody else in indie-dom, delivering postcollege angst in an intimidating quaver-to-throat-ripping howl. Screaming Females' emotionally detailed songs and tight playing push against a slightly muddy sound straight outta the mid-'80s underground. "I Believe in Evil" thunders at religion, while "Skull" packs a swinging stoner-rock jam into less than five minutes. But Power Move doesn't touch the band's live performances. See them once, and Paternoster will always be with you, the tiny shredder in that band.

I don't know what the guy before me is smoking, but Power Move is DEFINITELY not "typical, indie scene college rock". What Marissa Paternoster is able to do with her guitar absolutely blows my mind. It's honestly hard to even describe their music because it is so unlike anything you have ever heard. The sound is so tight, you are literally listening in awe wondering "how did they come up with that!?". King Mike and drummer Jarrett D. are just as talented musicians, keeping up with Marissa's frantic guitarwork while making the songs truly their own. Lacking energy? Go to one of their live shows and be careful not to let the janitor mop up your melted face on the way out.

this band isnt as good as people make them out to be. i think theyll stay underground because they arent good enough and dont stand up to any great bands. and if they do get picked up, it'll be short lived because they are medicore, not amazing. i downloaded this album and listened to it in its entirety a few times, trying to let it set in, but all i can get out of it is that the melody in the chorus to the song "skull" sounds like something ive heard before but i just cant pinpoint what it is, but it's something. just seems like this band is lacking a particular punch than makes rock music what it is. this is just your typical indie scene college rock. not saying thats a bad thing but if thats what you like, thats your choice. I prefer a good harder rocking more intense band with energy, like the bands from the 90's, like the one, the only, NIRVANA! face it, they'll always be great. im tired of indie kids bashing them for making real music before they could. We need a new Nirvana and this band is not it! they're just another band that may "make it" but just won't leave a lasting impression on many people, if anyone. Nirvana left an impression on millions. **** this. Im ready for good bands. Return of GRUNGE. WHEN? WE ARE WAITING
