Guns N' Roses, 'Chinese Democracy' (Geffen)

Finally, the balls-out going-away party Dubya deserves.

Guns N' Roses codependents are rejoicing over Chinese Democracy's long-awaited release, perhaps the most-delayed album in rock history.

But think, for a second, about our fragile economy: According to a 2005 New York Times story, Axl Rose spent more than $13 million recording this thing; if left unsatisfied, his appetite for construction might keep the West Hollywood service industry afloat for another decade. Is now really the best time for this gravy train to pull into the station?

You bet.

An outrageously overblown pop-metal extravaganza, Chinese Democracy feels like a perfect epitaph for all the absurdity and nonsense of the George W. Bush era -- one final blowout before Principal Obama takes our idiocy away.

The music toggles between two primary modes: grinding industrial rock and keys-and-strings balladry. (Imagine Rammstein covering Wings, basically.) Yet to that blueprint Rose and his battalion of musicians (including no fewer than five guitarists) append every trick new money can buy: hip-hop beats, Middle Eastern–influenced riffs, space-cowboy atmospherics, and, of course, Rose's still-astounding vocals, often multitracked into a paranoid boys chorus.

Singling out highlights seems antithetical to Rose's double-widescreen vision, but with their memorable melodies, "Better," "This I Love," and "Riad N' the Bedouins" (say what?) rise above the aural onslaught.

Blast ’em at top volume as you wave good-bye to our yellow brick road.

What made the Beatles so great ? They always tried something new on the next record...Axl does the same on Chinese Democracy.
A lot of times the cd sounds like Use your Illusion mixed with U2's Achtung Baby + Nine Inch Nails.
Axl still delivers, his voice is unique and he is still the best at what he does.
The album sounds angry, fresh and consistent.
Don't miss Slash at all...Robin Finck is a more interesting player...
Bottom line is: this is a very impressive/solid work, better than 99% of the crap out there these days...
Love Street of Dreams, TWAT, This I Love, Better, Madagascar...

Way to go all out on this review. Pathetic. how do you have a job reviewing music. Everyone should read Chuck Klosterman's real review at avclub. Oh way to get the typical Bush bashing in. Got to make people like you. How bold.

What the f**k does President Bush have to do with ANYTHING related to Guns N' Roses or the album 'Chinese Damocracy'?

This review is as pathetic a review of any album I've ever seen and it appears that the "journalist" used the opportunity to slag off all things politically opposite to his own sensibilites and not only does he fail miserably, he accomplishes absolutely nothing of any value or worth. It's this kind of pathetic, imbecilic bulls**t that cause me to cancel my subscription years ago and this being the first time I've read either the website or the magazine after all this time proves my instincts were spot on. And yet the publishers of this rag are confused as to why their circulation numbers are plumeting...

But once again, this "journalist" as well as the magazine overall, proves yet again that the collective stupidity of the whiny, elitist, knee-jerk, bleeding-heart (soley for their own elitist brethren) uber-liberal Democrat Party is surpassed ONLY by their incredible and mind-numbing intellectual dishonesty.

That, as well as how the 'Jackass' is the PERFECT mascot for said Democrat Party.

wow! Spot On! Exactly what I was thinking.  The tired and invalid industry paradigm that drove their ride over the cliff (Contemporary Music Industry) burned with such intensity that the wreckage dissipated before they knew they were over white line.  No evidence the wreckage...No culpability!  So...Blame GnR...Blame Axl...Blame Bush...Blame everything and anything but themselves.  I read a review that blamed Axl for Geffen's demise! B.S. Geffen clung to crusty boot straps of that same industy paradigm praying that Chinese Democracy would be their solution...their salvation.  Their $2 million bonus for early completion couldn't satiate Axl's artistic proclivities...whether you think he's artistic or not, you have to love that he told them to F*** Off!  Come one, the April Fools Day "Fool Review" was lengtheir and at least attempted some analytical insight and semblance of a human strain.  If the reviewers effort was to write a review as poor as he thought the album would be upon release, I suppose he suceeded.  If he thinks that he is right, then I know he failed miserably.  Dito on the Political commentary and subterfuge...Imagine whate the term  "journalistic gerrymandering" could mean while writing your next review for Spin

No f**king way!! Hunter S. Thompson came back from the grave to post a thread on Spin.com?! Hey asshole, you should have spent less time padding your piece with syllables and more time ensuring that said syllables actually formed coherent, gramatically correct sentences. "Semblance of a human strain"? What the f**k is that?

MT Review of Chinese Democracy

Overall, way too much hype of this one! Can you believe that they would actually put someone in jail over "Chinese Democracy"? Hmmm ironic.

Well it is good to hear Axl again with something new. This is going to be one of those records in which you will have to hear numerous times to let it seep in past your bad blood for the years of waiting. But listening to it, it is around average, maybe a little bit better just because.
I think the album is average but since it is GNR I give it a little more props. Axl has his voice and keeps the dragging songs strong. If he wasn't in this band it would not be listened to. There are a few good tracks off this album but nothing impressive. I give it a 5 out of 10.

Track #

1. Chinese Democracy-

This has got to be the best song on this album. It has a really good vibe, great movement to the song and the solo rips all the way through. On a personal note I have found myself humming the melody of it, so it does has resonance and will hold up.

2. Shackler's Revenge-
This song has the groove that was needed to get on the air. A lot of weird guitar parts in it which sounds pretty good, a little over produced and not raw enough for that GNR feel. But it is pretty good, great hook in the chorus and Axl delivers at times which is pretty impressive.

3. Better-

This must be the "girl getting song" off it. Can someone say November Rain but modernized with more guitar. I like this song and very catchy, good crunchy guitar and I think that pulls the song off. Good song! My compliments to the chef!

4. Street of Dreams-

Almost lost me at the beginning with the "November Rain part 2" sound with the piano. Axl really rips in this one. Great vocal range and at times can give you chills. Good song, the vocals rule in this one. And remember NR2 when you hear it.

5. If the World-

Wow, is that flamenco/salsa with a **** driven guitar in the background? I'll buy that. This song has a lot of sampling in it keep your ears out for it. I could hear this song in a lounge, but with a few long haired guitarist hiding in the background. It's probably the most dragging song on here.

6. There Was a Time-

Sampling starts this one again, a trend of whats to come? The songs drags but has a good hook in the chorus. The lyrics are really good. Good job on that.

7. Catcher In The Rye-

Ok piano again. Is this Axl's Beatles record? I am not feeling this song. It is too much like a Beatles song and not like a GNR song. Not sleazy enough, well there isn't any at all. La, la la la la,,, what the hell is that?

8. Scraped -

This song tries to pull it off pretty heavy but the intro doesn't se it up. I guess that is a good thing. This is a pretty good song. Good guitarwork in this one and the lyrics are superb and the hook is prevalent throughout the song. Meaning the verses are very strong as well as the chorus.

9. Riad n'The Bedouins-

Sampling starts this one. It is pretty blah throughout the whole song. The lyrics are really good. But it is just blah.

10. Sorry-

All you Pink Floyd fans should like this one. Give it a listen and you will think he got the backup band from PF. Axl keeps the song flowing, good vocals and midway the guitars pick up and saves the song. Yeah Pink Floyd all the way. Good mellow song with some good guitar riffs in there.

11. I.R.S.-

Samples start this one. This is about one of the best songs off this one, too bad it was leaked a few years back. Great song from beginning to end. Axl is right on target with this one and has some deep guitar that makes you think of Sabbath. I like that! Good solo also. Overall one of the best tracks off this one!

12. Madagascar-

Good song for a ballad on this one. Very catchy throughout and the vocals or on par. I like this one. Strong throughout the entire song and Axl put emotion into this song and it works. Great job.

13. This I Love-

Piano and Axl. Don't get me wrong this is a good song. Axl rules this song and it works. Very catchy feel to it. I am thinking Scorpions with this one. Get the lighters out for this one!! Good solo in it, great transition from the mellow and the Spanish feel to it. Good work on that part.

14. Prostitute-

Sampling starts it off. Mellow and a piano follows it. Transition throughout the song is superb. I enjoy this song. Definitely is not cruising music but it will relax you and take you through the journey that you were just in for with the album. Guitar solo was short but it needed it. Axl's voice is still strong and maintains this song.

So get your butt over to Best Buy and pick up a copy of it!

Why would you think anybody gives a f**k about your track by track impression of the album? If you wanna comment, either tell us you like it or you dont; you aren't going to be discovered by posting this piece of shit on a message board.

wenders99

Honestly, Mr. Wood, how can you possibly tie in the current administration to this disc? It's absolutely juvenile to do so. You exude such a "na na nana na" tone that it's virtually impossible to take you seriously. You're not clever enough to effectively tie this disc into any cultural or political tide, so stick to what you're average at - talking about music.

This is all we get? I feel like this reviewer wrote this on a Burger King napkin while at the wheel of a Prius en route to an erectile dysfunction support group for lame reviewers. I like brevity, but this is like a giant period that the biggest pad in the world can't cover up; it's a period like a gun shot to the head, in it's mind-numbingly irrelevance that starts dead and ends dead. Tell me why does Kanye West get the equivalence of Gone with the Wind and GNR gets the amount of words on the back of a credit card? I know size doesn't matter but you at least have to "get it up" first! This review is horrible and doesn't even deserve to be called a review; let's just call it "wanking around" or "premature ejaculation of the pen" or something. Sad. Very Sad. Look, I just wrote more words than he did.

The meaning of life is to continue the infinite process. Slurping coffee at three in the morning, keeping my degenerative arthritis under control with painkillers, listening to Burl Ives' rendition of "Happy Birthday, Jesus" -- which still doesn't compare to R. Lee Ermey's version in Full Metal Jacket -- squinting my lame-ass left eye to write because my glasses are being repaired right now, I stumbled upon Mik's critical response to Guns N' Roses long-awaited Chinese Democracy and decided to toss in my two silver yuans. Last night my wife insisted I open one of two Christmas gifts; one was a CD, the other a DVD. (She wraps Christmas gifts beautifully--she just doesn't know how to package them for the benefit of mystery and surprise on Christmas Day.) To my delight I opened Chinese Democracy and tore through the plastic wrap and security tape like Marilyn Manson ripping the pages out of a Bible. I was truly happy with my wife's thoughtfulness and equally amazed by the fact that Amazon had not yet depleted its stock of Chinese Democracy last week. I went to work right away devouring the twelve genius tracks I'd been waiting to hear since Axl & Co. covered the Rolling Stones for Interview With a Vampire back in the day. (Admittedly, "Oh My God" -- GNR's single for End of Days -- is also brilliant, however, it was left off their Greatest Hits compilation and, consequently, seems to have faded into the wet dreams of GNR completists.) I slid it into my DVD-RW drive, clapped on my headphones (my wife was watching the piss-poor Max Payne and I desperately wanted to drown out its cheap dialogue), kicked back with a Kool Light 100, and enjoyed the best damn hard rock album since Van Halen's Balance. My rating for Chinese Democracy was a no-brainer. * * * * * * out of a possible * * * * * *. (For more details and explanations of my ratings system -- included in magazine, newspaper and blog critiques like this one -- feel free to check out my SPIN blog where this particular critical scale is defined.) Essentially, I shrugged off the author's review as status quo; this publication's stratagem is to avoid enthusiasm while not appearing smarmy or dissonant. Its core readership expects such strategies; its advertisers reflect its methods -- why expect any difference with Chinese Democracy? I'm not negating those of you whose passions light up the screen with hell-bent rage. I'm not attempting to defend SPIN's review of or ride the fence in an effort to save myself from being flamed, either. I'm just offering the framework for my reasons for awarding a six-star review to Chinese Democracy in an effort to establish objectivity before continuing. I absolutely love the fact that Chinese Democracy cost $13 million to make; I absolutely love the fact that Chinese Democracy was recorded in so many different studios in just as many places around the United States and elsewhere; I absolutely love the fact that Chinese Democracy took so goddamn long to record, too. Long-awaited? That's an understatement. As one critic observed, Axl Rose's self-indulgence creating this masterwork is "the most rock & roll thing" about it. And why not? This is Axl's baby -- always has been, always will be. It's impossible for me to pick Chinese Democracy apart song-by-song. Similar to Duran Duran's Rio or Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon this album works as a whole without stand-outs or filler. Every track is a gem -- no filler. You'd have to be contemptuous of some part of every song on Chinese Democracy before ripping through it track-by-track or trolling its lines. And it's absurd to observe Chinese Democracy as some form of political concept album. It isn't. It's a collective of emotional and psychological representations of the group as a whole -- a statement neither separating GNR's new line-up of artists from those in Velvet Revolver, nor a meandering ego-trip for Axl Rose. If anything, Axl makes it pretty clear that this project is about anything but ego. "It was a long time for you/(It was a long time)/It was a long time for me/(It was a long time)" sounds naturally egalitarian, whether he's addressing his fans and critics or some ex-girlfriend he can't quite shake the memory of. Perhaps both. But why read into it any further than what it is: one part of a whole. And why bitch about how long Guns N' Roses took to deliver the Best Album of 2008? (Maybe -- just maybe -- the Best Album of the Past Ten Years?) We've been blessed by this God-inspired CD whose importance and timelessness has now and forever been pressed into rock & roll history. I love Chinese Democracy so much I'm almost tempted to have my wife re-wrap it and stick it back under the tree so I can rejoice in its discovery all over again. But...nah. She's asleep right now. And I value my life. Guns N' Roses Chinese Democracy Score= * * * * * *
