Count Bass D

'L7'

Seasoned indie MC reports from lo-fi outskirts of Cashville.

Spin Rating7 of 10

Thirteen years after his unjustly neglected debut, Pre-Life Crisis, Nashville's Dwight "Count Bass D" Farrell is still a quirky Deep South firebrand. He juices his tunes with R&B flavor and spices his beats with charmingly off-key vocals and stentorian rhymes. Tart bangers ("Neon Soul," "Personal Things") spit out of his MPC sampler at a frantic pace, and the ruddy, unevenly mixed L7 flies by in about 30 minutes. But even at his most erratic, the Count exhibits more raw soul than a thousand Chris Browns.
