The Virgins, 'The Virgins' (Atlantic)

Since the Strokes forgot how to be the Strokes…

Gossip Girl's got nothing on this. Over 38 taut minutes, these New York kids reflect the mirror-ball gleam of primo INXS and Emotional Rescue–era Rolling Stones onto the lives of today's young, rich, and wasted. If "She's Expensive" didn't slink along so suavely on a skittering high-hat and burbling bass groove, if "Fernando Pando" didn't perfectly capture low-lit hedonism and morning-after regret, if every damn song didn't have an such a stylish chorus, The Virgins might draw some jealous sneers. But they do—so it doesn't.
