Air, 'Pocket Symphony' (Astralwerks)

French electronic auteurs scale down their sound.

While retaining the meticulous sonics of Beck/Radiohead collaborator Nigel Godrich, Air's Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel eliminate almost all percussion from their fourth album, streamlining the music's already intimate Gallic lushness and plaintive melodicism.

LCD Soundsystem, 'Sound of Silver' (DFA/Capitol)

NYC groove merchant's stunning statement.

Of all the current dance-rock acts, LCD Soundsystem generates grooves that are the most simultaneously disco and punk.

Relient K, 'Five Score and Seven Years Ago' (Capitol)

Peppy sing-alongs for puppy lovers and true believers.

Few bands play punk-influenced modern rock as proficiently as these amiable Christian dudes, and on their fifth album, the piano-driven anthems that catapulted Relient K from the main stage at Cornerstone to the studios of TRL remain intact.

Sevendust, 'Alpha' (7Bros./ Asylum)

Atlanta noise boys say goodbye to sensitivity.

After stomping through the late '90s with a punishing aggro-metal attack, Sevendust eased off the throttle during the past few years, even putting out a live acoustic record. It was a good move, though it left their more dogmatic fans hoarse from howling, "Sell-outs!" Unfortunately, Alpha answers the hecklers with an uninspiring return to unrelenting brutality.

Wolf & Cub, 'Vessels' (4AD)

Relentless below-the-belt groove from Aussie rockers.

Wolf & Cub distinguish themselves from other canine bands (Wolf Eyes, Wolf Parade, Wolfmother) via a two-drummer lineup, but their secret weapon is whatever the hell bassist Thomas Mayhew is using to mike his cabinet.

RJD2, 'The Third Hand' (XL)

Emerging from the Shadow, with middling results.

Well, it's 2007 -- what self-respecting artist could spend his whole life as a trip-hop DJ?
