Boasting a hit album, a brilliant live act, a cadre of squealing
groupies (and that's just Drew Barrymore and Winona Ryder), and an
opening spot on the Rolling Stones tour, the Strokes are without a
doubt the Band of the Year--whether they like it or not. The
skinny-tied fab five are heralding a new era of sexy, cool
rock'n'roll. And despite the pressures of constant touring, they
look remarkably sharp.

It isn't easy being a gangsta-rap legend, a cartoon character, a

to keep it all under control.

After 20-plus years of producing perhaps the finest underground

D.C.-based Dischord Records are, well, still saying no--no to
rootless commercialism, no to cheap nostalgia, no to doing music
business as usual. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the Green Bay Packers
of punk

O.J.'s got nothing on these people. From pedophiles to
crackheads to the world's worst friends, partners, and parents,
rock stars have legendarily distinguished themselves as the answer
to the question: "How low can you go?"
