  • Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino

    Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino

Cosentino won plenty of hearts this year, charming indie kids everywhere with the surf rock tunes on her band's debut album, Crazy For You, and with her adorable, stoned tweets. She gushed about '90s pop culture moments, Snooki from Jersey Shore, hip-hop, weed, and pretty much everything else you can think of, posting tons of videos and Twitpics along the way. Her cat, Snacks, became a Twitter celebrity in his own right, "tweeting" from his own account and appearing in Twitpics like this one, uploaded on June 21, which shows what the pair would look like if their faces were switched. Creepy. But also pretty darn cute.

  • Kanye West

    Kanye West

There's no doubt about it: West was the king of Twitter this year. He had 90,000 followers within his first eight hours on the social networking site, and now he has close to two million. He wrote about jogging in Lanvin, walking into Nobu without shoes, the difficulties of sleeping on fur pillows, and finding a good Persian rug with "cherub imagery." His first Twitpic, posted on July 28, shows him making fun of the "small-ass jet" he was about to fly in. "Baby mama jet," he called it, referring to the jets that billionaires give their baby mamas. It made all of his future Twitpics -- including those of his diamond teeth and the gold goblets he drinks from -- seem just a little less absurd.

  • Taylor Swift

    Taylor Swift

On June 13, country darling Taylor Swift spent 14.5 hours meeting and greeting fans (and signing more than 10,000 autographs) at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena. She tweeted this picture at the end of what must have been a very long day for her, writing, "Today, beautiful, sweet people brought me these bracelets and wrote on my arm as the hours passed… Today was love." Say it with us now: Awww.

  • Tegan of Tegan and Sara

    Tegan of Tegan and Sara

Indie-pop sister act Tegan and Sara has a pretty big support system of friends and family who travel with them on the road -- like their bass player's mother, Dale (left), who looks like the band's lost third member in this Jan. 20 Twitpic alongside Tegan. The sisters always make sure to give shout-outs to the lesser-known members of their team on Twitter -- from their bus drivers to their sound crew.

  • Lil Wayne

    Lil Wayne

"#weezysfirsttweetfromjail" was a trending topic on Twitter several days before the Young Money rapper was released from Rikers Island Correctional Facility in New York on Nov. 4 -- but when he finally go out, it was Lil Wayne's friend and personal videographer, DJ Scoob Doo, who made headlines by posting this compromising photo on Twitter. In it, Lil Wayne is enjoying his newfound freedom with a cigar and what looks like a glass of cognac -- even though his probation terms prohibit him from consuming any alcoholic substance for three years. Whoops!

  • Hayley Williams & Chad Gilbert

    Hayley Williams & Chad Gilbert

The Paramore frontwoman and the New Found Glory guitarist, who are a couple, celebrated Halloween as Sally and Jack from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Hayley's tweets on subjects ranging from ardent Japanese fans of her band to eating cornflakes with her family have made her a longtime SPIN Twitter favorite.

  • Katy Perry

    Katy Perry

2010 was a big year for the pop star. She married the raucous British comedian of her dreams, Russell Brand, and saw her second studio album, Teenage Dream, debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling 192,000 copies in its first week. The record's first single, "California Gurls," quickly became a summer anthem, and the two following singles -- "Teenage Dream" and "Firework" -- were instant hits as well. So how did she celebrate? On Sep. 5, she donned a pair of South Park pajamas and popped a bottle of champagne, then flashed a giant smile for her four million followers on Twitter. Hey, you'd do the same.

    Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne

In October, the Flaming Lips joined the ranks of MGMT, of Montreal, Weezer, and countless other bands who've made guest appearances entertaining kids and adults on the Nick Jr. show Yo Gabba Gabba. Coyne posted this Twitpic during the taping -- but, really, doesn't it look like the filming for a new Flaming Lips music video?

  • Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig

    Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig

Forgive Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig if he's having trouble breathing — the energetic frontman has had quite the year. The band released their second album, Contra, in January, launched a lengthy North American tour, got sued by the woman who appears on Contra's cover, and achieved a notable amount of mainstream success and MTV airtime with songs like "Holiday" and "Giving Up the Gun." A little extra oxygen never hurt anyone.

  • Courtney Love

    Courtney Love

Last year, Courtney Love was all about confrontation, using Twitter to pick fights with everyone from Lily Allen to Taylor Momsen and posting long, incoherent rants about the accountants and lawyers involved with Kurt Cobain's estate. In 2010, she quieted down, posting less text and more pics. She documented her many wild, glamorous, head-to-toe designer outfits. In most, she was barely recognizable as the Courtney Love who used to stumble down red carpets drunk -- but every now and then, we got a taste of the old wildchild, like in this Twitpic, posted on Sep. 18.

  • Dresden Dolls

    Dresden Dolls

This is how Amanda Palmer and her Dresden Dolls cohort Brian Viglione end a long night of performing: at 5 a.m., in a hotel bed, with beer and friends. The duo recently reunited after several years of pursuing separate projects, and Amanda -- Twitter personality that she is -- made sure to document their reunion tour. This photo, posted on Nov. 22, is just one of many moments captured with her iPhone's Hipstamatic app, which makes everything look cool and retro. Just check out this picture of Amanda gallivanting on the beach during some downtime on the road.

  • Rihanna

    Rihanna

So pop stars don't always wake up looking fabulous. Rihanna proved this on Nov. 7 when she posted a Twitpic of herself getting ready for the European Music Awards. Woman around the globe let out a collective sigh of relief after witnessing weeks of Twitpics of the singer looking perfectly polished and camera-ready, hanging out in private hotel suites in Hawaii and designer showrooms in Paris…

    Lady Gaga and pals

Tickets for the 2010 leg of Lady Gaga's Monster Ball tour sold out almost immediately, but Gaga, ever the thoughtful Mother Monster, took to Twitter to make sure that the fans who didn't get tickets still got to experience some of the fun. She posted tons of tweets and Twitpics from the road, including this awesome backstage shot of her and her trusty tourmates -- Justin Tranter, lead singer of the glam rock group Semi Precious Weapons, Lady Starlight, a DJ and NYC nightlife fixture, and Darian Darling, a well known drag queen and makeup artist. The photo, posted on July 2, showed the world that beneath the crazy wigs, corsets, and flame-shooting bras, Gaga's just a girl who likes to hang out and have a good time with her friends.
