Last night, SPIN took over New York's Bowery Ballroom to celebrate our Year in Music alongside longtime fave-raves Santigold and Grizzly Bear, two artists once again in the upper reaches of our Top 50 Albums of the Year. Santigold exuded effortless cool as her two dancers performed buttcentric aerobic feats and handstands on the tiny Bowery stage. After inviting five very psyched audience members up to dance for "Creator" — plus bringing on a dancing horse (above) — she offered a hilarious bit of banter: "I especially want to spank SPIN... Spank SPIN?Thank SPIN." Hey, it was a party.
Grizzly Bear brought the 2012 vibes in earnest with a set that drew heavily from their moody, evocative Shields. Singer Ed Droste was the vulnerable core, double-fisting the mike; drummer Chris Bear provided the muscle, pounding out 16th-note flurries. The crowd lit up noticeably for Veckatimest's "Ready, Able," clapping and cheering along with the mellow stunner.
Thanks again to our sponsor Virgin Mobile, as well as Red Diamond Wine, Heineken, and Svedka who kept the evening festive until the last notes of Grizzly Bear's "Two Weeks"
