The founders of Austin Sound, which is dedicated to covering and promoting the city's music scene, and local independent radio station KVRX packed Emo's, the Austin mecca of indie music, last night to host their first ever benefit concert. Fans who came early were treated to the psychedelic-folk of the Channel and the synth-pop of local up-and-comers Operator. "There's a lot of really great music being made in Austin right now, and we wanted [Austin Sound] to be a place devoted to showcasing these young, talented bands," Doug Freeman of Austin Sound told SPIN.com. As the temperature dipped during an unusually chilly Texas night, the crowd packed in tight for Golden Bear, who unleashed their guitar-swinging, trumpet-blasting orgy of anthemic pop. As the band blazed through tracks from their eponymous debut, the inside stage became a blur of frenzied dancing and fist-pumping excitement. ERIC UHLIR
