Cut Chemistry

BOULDER, CO: Cut Chemist and Lyrics Born spit rhymes, splice beats at the Fox Theatre.

Lyrics Born -- or "Mr. LB," as he took to calling himself -- traded barbs with back-up singer Joyo Velarde through his 70-minute lounge-hop set at Boulder, CO's Fox Theatre. On the frenzied ode to high maintenance women "Difference," LB repeated the chorus of "I'm just a dude" while JV came back with "It takes time to look this good." The battle of the sexes incited the crowd's energy as much as the funky house band's bass licks, which on "LB Variety Show" were thick enough to make Bootsy Collins blush.

Splicing in public service/school safety announcements with '70s-era funk and R&B, headliner Cut Chemist amped up this eco-friendly college town normally associated with bluegrass and Birkenstocks. Chemist, one of a few cut/sample/scratch DJs with a major label behind him, dug into countless tracks off his latest, The Audience's Listening, book-ended by twin video scrims visually narrating his grooves. On rapid-fire dueling decks, Chemist played "Metrorail Thru Space," the bass-heavy "(My 1st) Big Break," and the afro-Cuban jungle-inspired "The Garden." STORY BY BRIAN KENNEY.
