Say It Ain’t So, Rivers: Is Weezer Caput?

Maybe Weezer doesn’t want to play Make Believe anymore. According to MTV.com, the band might not come back for a sixth full-length album. “When we were putting [2005’s Make Believe] together and finishing up the artwork, I didn’t know what was going to happen in the future and I told everyone that.” The break-up speculation was fueled by a liner note quoting Shakespeare’s The Tempest: “This rough magic / I here abjure, and, when I have required / Some heavenly music, which even now I do / To work mine end upon their senses that / This airy charm is for, I’ll break my staff / Bury it certain fathoms in the earth / And deeper than did ever plummet sound / I’ll drown my book.” Rivers gives a vague answer to the questions raised by this quote from the bard: “One of the reasons why I put that quote in there, because I thought it’s a really nice way to say goodbye, if it is a goodbye.” Weezer is touring with the Foo Fighers this fall, so if it is a last hurrah, at least it will be a loud one.
