'Juno' Soundtrack an Instant iTunes Fave

The soundtrack to this season's indie hit should land lots of Moldy Peaches in Christmas stockings.

There are obvious reasons to recommend Juno, the new film starring Ellen Page and Michael Cera, which opens nationwide on Christmas Day: Because Page's character, Juno, looks at Cera's Bleeker the way I wished girls would look at me as a teen; because Cera makes awkward awesome; because Jason Bateman deliriously plays a grunge rocker unwittingly trapped in a suburban midlife crisis; and because its litany of genius catchphrases are good enough to permeate youth culture forever -- honest to blog. Yes, that's one of them.

But my first out-loud utterance to my friends as the credits rolled and our tears dried was something I hadn't said in a long time: "I need this soundtrack." Now, mind you, this isn't one of those landmark soundtracks with custom collaborations or exclusive tracks. It's a blend of the instantly familiar -- Belle & Sebastian, Mott the Hoople, and Sonic Youth's Carpenters cover -- and a handful of Kimya Dawson/Moldy Peaches tracks that have been around for years. But having them in order, on my iPod, would allow me to instantly revisit this gem of a movie right away, particularly the Moldy Peaches' "Anyone Else But You," which permeates the narrative.

I'm not the only one with whom Juno's tunes are resonating: Despite being on only 40 screens nationwide so far, it's the most popular soundtrack on iTunes, and is No. 11 on iTunes' overall album chart as of this afternoon. As Juno herself might say, "Thundercats are go!"
