Kids Ink

The young Fergies of yesteryear may have been weaned on Kids Inc., but today’s burgeoning rock stars can get a lifestyle jumpstart with the new toy designed to give kids ink. Spin Master’s Gr8 TaT2 Maker sounds suspiciously like a plaything from the classic SNL skit where Dan Aykroyd defended his toy company’s “Bag O’Glass” (“Look, we put a label on every bag that says, ‘Kid! Be careful — broken glass!'”).

The product description reads: “Open up your very own pretend play tattoo parlor. This easy-to-use tattoo maker kit includes an electronic tattoo pen and funky stencils. Using soft, safe pulsating action, the tattoo pen creates realistic, washable designs with dramatic effects. Requires two AA batteries (not included).” Blogs have been questioning the product’s tastefulness (perhaps in an attempt to class it up a la Apple, the toy is called i-Tattoo on the manufacturer’s website), but many reviews posted by parents on the websites retailing the toy have been positive. At least they won’t have to pay for the laser removal.

Here’s what people are saying:

“I bought this for my six year old son’s birthday who LOVES tattoos! It’s great, gives the look and ‘feel’ of a real tattoo. It comes with like 30 re-useable stencils (which are rather sturdy). The only downfall is that there are only three colors (brown, red, and blue) and there are no replacement markers. I think if there were more colors, the tattoos would look better and there could be a bit more creativity.” — S. Bartlett, amazon.com

“Curious. Do they have a photo of a girl giving her friend a tat on the small of her back?” — tyler galloway, swissmiss.typepad.com

“There’s a Federline joke in here somewhere…” — Mr. Black, gizmodo.com

“I’ll stick with getting mine from the good folks at Cracker Jack, thank you very much!” — strider_mt2k, gizmodo.com

“Boys, remember: The tribal tattoo around the bicep is so five years ago. Like, when you were in diapers. And girls, don’t get a tattoo with your boyfriend’s name. Kindergarten romances almost never last.” — Tommy Tomlinson, ttomlinson.blogspot.com

“Okay, so Awesome-Redneck-Camo-Hat kid has some pretty sweet flames, but what’s Emo-Hair kid getting? Some totally wussy dolphin tat? Chump.” — Silky, neatorama.com
