Yo La Tengo’s excellent Fade, as SPIN’s Keith Harris wrote, once again exists within the intimacy of the aspirationally long-running marriage of guitarist Ira Kaplan and drummer Georgia Hubley. Directed by Phil Morrison, who helmed the Oscar-nominated 2005 film Junebug, the video for gentle folk-pop ballad “I’ll Be Around” carries over that theme. Billed as the Hoboken trio’s first video since 1997 (the time-lapse clip for Fade opener “Ohm” and animated short for Fade closer “Before We Run” were atypical), “I’ll Be Around” stars Superchunk’s Mac McCaughan, who lip-syncs and strums the guitar in the woods, while the band members cook what looks to be a delicious meal. Unfortunately, bass player James McNew has evidently been up to something away from the safety of the group. Throughout the clip, text from recipes flashes across the screen, as do snippets of old lyrics from classic Yo La songs, expanding the circle of intimacy to include the group’s longtime fans.
