Ylvis’ ‘The Fox’ Crowned YouTube’s Top Trending Video of 2013

Okay, so 276 million Ylvis fans definitely can’t be wrong. The Norwegian duo’s ridiculously popular video for “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)” is, no surprise, YouTube’s top trending video of the year. The coronation comes after some notable cover versions, a late-night TV debut on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, a fox-filled Halloween, a Saturday Night Live send-up featuring Scandal star Kerry Washington, and a deal to turn the song into a children’s book.

Other top trending YouTube clips include the “Original Army Edition” of the “Harlem Shake” (95 million views), the “Chatroulette Version” of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” (78 million views), and the Lonely Island’s Kendrick Lamar- and Adam Levine-featuring “YOLO” video (53 million views).

Despite the massive number of clicks “The Fox” brought in for YouTube, the short wouldn’t have taken top honors if YouTube had categorized it as a “music video” instead of a “trending video.” Pitted against conventional videos, Ylvis’ unintentional EDM parody would actually finish fourth for the year, behind Miley’s “We Can’t Stop” clip (305 million views) and ahead of Katy Perry’s Tarzan-aping “Roar” visual (254 million views). “Wrecking Ball” was the second-most trending video, while PSY’s “Gangnam Style” successor, “Gentleman,” finished on top, collecting just under 600 million views. Call PSY a one-hit wonder at your peril.
