Amy Winehouse had no illegal drugs in her system at the time of her death, toxicology reports reveal, although the singer consumed alcohol sometime before her tragic death in London on July 23. Winehouse's family announced the test results in a statement released today:

"Toxicology results returned to the Winehouse family by authorities have confirmed that there were no illegal substances in Amy's system at the time of her death. Results indicate that alcohol was present but it cannot be determined as yet if it played a role in her death. The family would like to thank the police and coroner for their continuing thorough investigations and for keeping them informed throughout the process." A formal inquest into her death is due on October 26.

Some family members believed Winehouse had died from alcohol withdrawl. According to a report in British tabloid The Sun, the singer ignored doctors' orders to gradually stop drinking, opting instead to go cold turkey. "Abstinence gave her body such a fright, they thought it was eventually the cause of her death," the family member said.
