As we inch ever closer to the release of Widowspeak’s second Captured Tracks album, Almanac, we get yet another angle on the Brooklyn-based dream-pop outfit. “Ballad of the Golden Hour” was a mellow strummer prone to moments of confident cacophony. “Dark Age” was a tough but pretty grinder in the tradition of Warpaint, offset with bright bursts of highlife guitar. And now we have “Thick as Thieves,” the quietest of the bunch, but a slippery little devil nonetheless. Singer Molly Hamilton coos out smoky, arcane-sounding meditations about forgetting the past while the band weaves a dark, psych-kissed tapestry behind her. What sounds like a buzzing accordion sets the tone while jangling strum, warm bass notes, and fingers sliding on strings flesh out the rest. Captured Tracks is currently taking pre-orders for the limited vinyl version of Almanac, which comes with an exclusive poster illustrated by Hamilton.
