Who Charted? Frank Ocean’s Surprise Release Debuts at No. 2

Frank Ocean

First! Considering the market for mainstream, country-tinged rock is still massive, it’s not a huge surprise that the Zac Brown Band’s fifth studio album Uncaged, and not Frank Ocean’s surprise-released, acclaimed major label debut channel ORANGE earned the top slot on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Uncaged sold 234,000 copies, making it the trio’s second No. 1 album, following 2010’s four times Grammy-nominated You Get What You Give.

2 Through 10: Ocean’s No. 2 arrival is still quite impressive — keep in mind, that’s just 3,000 fewer copies than Chris Brown’s recent No. 1 debut! Meanwhile, the Beliebers kept Justin Bieber’s Believe at No. 3 (45,000), Team Breezy supported Brown’s Fortune at No. 4 (a little less than 45,000), and Maroon 5 fans (Marooners? Fivers?) put Overexposed at No. 5 (44,000). No. 6 went to Linkin Park’s Living Things (37,000), followed by One Direction’s Up All Night (thanks to their all too dedicated Directioners), Adele’s practically life-supported 21 (35,000), Katy Perry’s practically ancient but recently sale-resuscitated Teenage Dream (34,000), and Kenny Chesney’s Welcome to the Fishbowl (32,000).

Deep ORANGE Sea: We’re likely to see Frank Ocean in the Top 10 again next week, considering the album got its physical release yesterday. The album had actually started shipping last week, so retailers were allowed to start selling it over the weekend. Fans bought 3,000 physical copies last week, which means 128,000 people downloaded it from iTunes. Ocean has also officially pwned Usher’s Looking 4 Myself, which sold 128,000 its first week.

Broken Record: At this point, all Adele can really do to top herself is to get her unborn child to guest on her next album and defeat Jay-Z and Blue Ivy’s record, because this week, she officially beats Alanis Morissette’s previously held title of having an album in the top 10 for the most weeks; Jagged Little Pill held on for 72 weeks, while 21 just hit its 73rd.
