Weezer: New LP Will be ‘Blue Album’ Meets ‘Pinkerton’

Weezer Everything Will Be Alright Release Date Video Ric Ocasek

Ever since a certain iconic ’90s band launched its “Weezer Wednesday” weekly video series, we’ve been getting a welcome, steady stream of content which we now know is teasing the new album, Everything Will Be Alright in the End. We’ve received some perplexing sound swatches, a video depicting a young Rivers Cuomo leaving home to follow his dreams, monstrous album art, and a clip of some new music blended with live footage.

Now Weezer have announced a September 30 drop-date for the project alongside a new preview — seen above — for a song called “Return to Ithaca,” which appears to be the same cruise-debuted cut previously thought to be called “Back the the Shack.”

As Consequence of Sound points out, Weezer drummer Pat Wilson dropped some further insight into the record’s direction in an in-the-studio interview with EW. “If you took the Pinkerton band and then play all the other records,” he said, “that’s what we sound like now. Bombastic, loose, kind of booming. This record sounds like it’s going to have the tight structure of ‘Blue Album’ with a little bit more abandon like Pinkerton.”

With Everything Will Be Alright in the End reunites the group with the Cars’ Ric Ocasek, who produced “The Blue Album” in 1994 and “The Green Album” in 2001. All this should offer some hope, at least, for fans of Weezer’s earlier sound who had been turned off in recent years with the less-than-amazing Raditude in 2009 and Hurley in 2010.
