Edited by guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, this video for the Mars Volta’s malevolently ebbing, flowing “The Malkin Jewel” is wonderfully contradictory. Filmed before a live audience in dramatic black and white, the band prowls through the 15-minute-plus song, which was the first single from the recent Noctourniquet. The multi-part epic lurches and bucks, bounces and soars, but the video is a relatively minimalist treatment of some maximalist music: Just the band, its fans, some flashing lights, and the magic that comes from total musical engagement.
