An Unreleased Velvet Underground Album Will Finally See the Light of Day

velvet underground box set unreleased album

The Velvet Underground‘s 1969 self-titled third album turned 45 this year, and they’re celebrating this landmark with a new, elaborately stuffed box set. While that’s great news on its own, the compellation will also offer fans a chance to play the “what-if game”

The set, which is scheduled for a November 24 release, will include 65 songs on six separate discs, though perhaps the most exciting inclusion has to be the band’s previously unreleased album. Apparently the New York art-rock pioneers recorded what would’ve been their fourth album in October of 1969, though most were shelved. Some of the songs intended for that album were put on later Velvet Underground’s Loaded in 1970 and Lou Reed‘s Transformer two years later, but this is the first time the full, never-before-released album will be available in one place.

The Velvet Underground gives fans yet another chance to buy more of Lou Reed’s music following the star’s death last October, not like anybody needed to be asked twice. Also included on the “super deluxe edition,” are a book with liner notes from Rolling Stone’s David Fricke, live recordings, and a series of mixes, including one by Luis Pastor “Val” Valentin, MGM’s house engineer. The set is available for pre-order here
