Listen to Usher’s New Song ‘Clueless’ Without Buying a Box of Cereal

Usher, Clueless

The pop music and breakfast cereal industries have been virtually symbiotic since John Lennon caused an international controversy in the ’60s by claiming the Beatles to be “bigger than Corn Flakes” something like that, anyway. It was a relationship that Usher Raymond recently tried to exploit for the release of his new song “Clueless,” which was made available exclusively though the purchase of Honey Nut Cheerios. The seemingly infallible promotional idea might not have actually gone so well, so over the weekend, the song has surfaced on the Internet, free from assocation with our country’s best-selling cereal.

It’s a pretty good love song, mostly notable for its whistling hook (not far from that of the recent B.o.B. and 2 Chainz hit “Headband”) and conspicuous absence of drums, which gives the song a woozy, formless feel to it that makes its confused, desperate lyrics all the more powerful. Of course, the lack of a beat means it’s not likely to break Usher’s recent cold streak at pop radio, which appears to have kept the status of his UR album in limbo for most of 2014. But hey, if it’s good enough for Honey Nut Cheerios, it’s good enough for us.

Listen to “Clueless” above, and look for UR to hopefully come out before the calendar turns to 2015. (As if!)
