Modest Mouse, the Faint, Twin Shadow Hit the Beach for U.S. Open of Surfing

U.S. Open of Surfing USOS Modest Mouse Faint Twin Shadow

Southern California’s long-running annual surfing competition, the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing, returns to Huntington Beach later this month and will bring with it an impressive array of musical talent. Two days of free concerts will follow once the daily wave-riding wraps, July 25 and 26, featuring no less than Modest Mouse, the Faint, Twin Shadow, Matt Costa, and FMLYBND.

The Thursday, July 25 show will find the Faint headlining with support from Twin Shadow and local up-and-comers FMLYBAND. On Friday, July 26, Modest Mouse will play following Matt Costa, a folk-pop fella who was in fact raised in Huntington Beach. Collectively, the shows are being billed as “the largest free concert of the summer.”

“Being a bunch of grungy kids growing up surfing and skating all over Southern California, we feel incredibly honored to be playing the U.S. Open this year,” said FMLYBND via statement. “It’s just the beginning for [us] and we are stoked to be … It’s only up from here.” Totally dude. Just remember, what goes up must come down. It’s the way of the wave, brahs.

The Vans U.S. Open of Surfing runs from July 20 through July 28 and will be webcast at the event’s website and via an app to come. The entire thing is free and open to the public.

Though its has evolved over the years, the Open has been taking place in one form or another since 1959, when it was known as the West Coast Surfing Champions. Last year’s contest included a music stage as well, with performances by TV on the Radio, Best Coast, Grouplove, Toro y Moi, and others.
