Hear Ty Segall’s Darkly Rattling Remake of T. Rex’s ‘The Motivator’

Ty Segall T. Rex 'The Motivator' Cover Record Store Day

Effing psyched garage-rock king Ty Segall has a lovely little gem planned for Record Store Day 2013. Two years ago he celebrated the vinyl lovers’ holiday by sharing the Ty Rex EP, a six-song set of T. Rex covers done in the lo-fi jangly San Francisco style we’ve come to hold so dear. On April 20, Segall will share Ty Rex 2, a 7-inch single featuring two more Marc Bolan songs. The A-side is “Cat Black (the Wizard’s Hat),” which originally appeared on 1969’s Unicorn. Meanwhile, B-side “The Motivator” hails from T. Rex’s seminal 1971 album Electric Warrior and is available to stream below. In Ty’s hands, the song sounds more ominous than celebratory, a darkly tinted tribute to a strange crown-stealing muse.
