Beck had some sage advice for his college-aged fans at last night’s mtvU Woodie Awards. “The golden rule’s always a good one,” he told SPIN.com on the red carpet at NYC’s Roseland Ballroom. “Keep it polished — keep it golden.” The artist later sang “Nausea” and “E-Pro” — accompanied by an entourage of marionettes — on the same stage that hosted performances by artists like TV on the Radio and Gym Class Heroes. Donning a pink corset designed by a fan, Imogen Heap, who also performed last night, revealed on the red carpet she was most looking forward to “getting [her] high note out of the way” during “Hide and Seek.” She was later spotted playing air drums and thrashing about during TV on the Radio’s energetic closing performance. Winners of the Woodies, which were voted on by more than 3.2 million college students, included Jared Leto’s 30 Seconds to Mars, who nabbed the “Best Live Action Video” award; Gnarls Barkley, who earned the “Left Field Woodie” awarded to the most original artist; the Subways, who claimed the “International Woodie” award; and Angels & Airwaves, who snagged the coveted “Woodie of the Year” prize.
