These New Puritans Serve Eyeball Hors D’oeuvres in Animated ‘V (Island Song)’ Video
Seven-and-a-half-minute clip from 'Field of Reeds' is intense viewing
These New Puritans’ virtuosically complex art rock belies their indie status, and the videos from the British band’s new Field of Reeds have been no less ambitious. Now, after the eerie “Organ Eternal” clip and the bleak, barren “Fragment Two” visual comes the mind-bending, animated short for “V (Island Song),” another intricately shifting track from the summer album. The narrative-based video for this one, scripted by These New Puritans’ Jack Barnett and directed by Picnic, plays off of the song’s darker tone, following a woman on a psychedelic journey that leads through a dinner party where eyeballs appear to be on the appetizer tray. In a way it’s all reminiscent of Queens of the Stone Age’s phantasmagoric, animated, similarly narrative-based …Like Clockwork videos, though in a style that more closely matches the band’s own knotty refinement. Watch above and join the protagonist as she gets sucked into some kind of wormhole.
