With over 4,000 contestants in Music Nation and Spin‘s Hot Pursuit competition, the one winner, Yorktown Heights, New York’s the Scarlet, just didn’t seem like enough. Hence the Rock Pile, a battle pitting rock songs head-to-head, and this time a band’s success or failure was solely up to their peers. And now, after over five weeks of competition, the results are in: San Diego-based seven-piece funk rockers the Theory of Funkativity triumphed with their tune “Promised Land,” a onslaught of thick, catchy guitar riffs mixed with a tight, reggae-like rhythm section, which won nearly all of the band’s online matchups. Congrats!

As the winner, the Theory of Funkativity is rewarded with $500, and the praise of fans across the web. But be sure to stay tuned; the second Hot Pursuit, a competition seeking the next undiscovered talent, will soon be launched and your band could be crowned the winner! Check back to spin.com/thecompetition this March for more details.
