See Naughty By Nature’s Treach Go in With the Roots on ‘O.P.P.’

Roots Treach O.P.P. Naughty By Nature

In 2011, SPIN celebrated the 20th anniversary of Naughty By Nature’s “O.P.P.” by speaking to the men who made the No. 1 hit all the way back in 1991. “Twenty years later,” said MC Vin Rock, “it’s one of the main reasons why promoters book us and fans want to see it. So it’s the gift that keeps on giving. It’s one of those songs that apparently will never die.” Indeed, group co-founder Treach joined the Roots to perform that classic ode to extramarital affairs in a web-exclusive clip for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. The band keeps it fairly minimal, focusing on percussion while incorporating those familiar little blips of the Jackson 5’s “ABC” via keys and guitar. Treach rips through the verses like he’s done it a million times. Which he undoubtedly has, but that doesn’t take away from the fun. On the other hand, Black Thought’s shout out to “all the ladies up in NBC” might be grounds for a workplace harrassment suit. As for us? Damn skippy we’re with it.
