Stream the Lowest Pair’s Graceful New Album, ‘The Sacred Heart Sessions’

the lowest pair, rosie, new track, the sacred heart sessions

Kendl Winter and Palmer T. Lee — a.k.a. sultry country duo the Lowest Pair — will return on February 24 with their second album, The Sacred Heart Sessions, which is on the way via Team Love. Recorded in an old church, the upcoming full-length is solemn and humble, and the production’s warmth and hollowness can be felt on one of the record’s graceful highlights, “Rosie.” Tangled melodies bounce around in the background as Winter’s voice cries, “Oh my Rosie darling / Oh my Rosie bee / I learned my lesson / Won’t you come back to me?” But the Washington-based duo doesn’t let up after that track: “Scavenger Hunt,” “Hogtied,” and “In the During Moment,” all maintain the same sort of heartwarming intimacy.

Reflecting on the recording process, Winter revealed the origin of the album’s tenderness in an email to SPIN: “We recorded The Sacred Heart Sessions at an old church now called the Sacred Heart Music Center in Duluth, Minnesota. It was a truly powerful experience to sing in the sanctuary underneath stain glass saints and in a space created to pray. We wanted our second album to not be too far removed from the sound and vibe of ’36¢’ but to differentiate itself sonically. We were able to accomplish that at the Sacred Heart Music Center. Another significant difference between our first album and The Sacred Heart Sessions is that the songs on ’36¢’ were written separately before and as we started collaborating as the Lowest Pair. We wrote about half the songs on The Sacred Heart Sessions together.”
