Hear the Baptist Generals’ Intricately Emotional ‘Broken Glass’

In 2003, the Baptist Generals released their debut album, No Silver/No Gold, on Sub Pop. The Denton, Texas-based band returns with its sophomore album, Jackleg Devotional to the Heart, on May 21, again via Sub Pop (pre-order here). For those who’ve been eagerly awaiting a follow-up, the new record is a major event, and advance track “Broken Glass” extends that feeling of giddy anticipation. The song begins with ambiance-seared, clockwork-like repetitions, before songwriter Chris Flemmons’ everyman voice comes in, opening up about “false starts” just as the song opens up into a stirring, folk-scuffed celebration of brokenness. The Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle has called the album “deeply moving,” and the two bands will be touring together. Listen to previously shared Jackleg track “Dog That Bit You” here and check out “Broken Glass” exclusively below.
