See Thao & the Get Down Stay Down Triumph Through ‘We the Common’

Thao & the Get Down Stay Down We the Common at ACL 2013

Earlier this year, Thao & the Get Down Stay Down released their third album, We the Common, a 12-track platter stuffed with highlights. There’s the twangy “Holy Roller,” the Joanna Newsom duet “Kindness Be Conceived,” and the LP’s semi-title track, “We the Common [For Valerie Bolden],” which was inspired by a woman who’s serving life without parole in the California prison system. In April, the ode to Ms. Bolden was paired with an official music video featuring This American Life host Ira Glass and comedian John Hodgman. Now, Thao & the Get Down Stay Down have treated SPIN to another visual for the life-affirming tune. As seen above, the video captures an intimate performance from the San Francisco band, with frontwoman Thao Nguyen singing and plucking at a banjo, leading the outfit through the buzzy-but-folksy anthem. After you watch, give a listen to our on-site interview with Nguyen from San Francisco’s Outside Lands festival.
