Terrific Twitter Trio of the Week
See why Beach House, the Strokes' Julian Casablancas, and LCD Soundsystem made our list.
Lots of musicians tweet — but all that Twitters is not gold.
That’s why you’ll want to check out SPIN.com every Friday to see whose tweets we’re reading this week — then update your TweetDeck!(Obligatory Self-Promotion: …while you’re at it, be sure to follow @SPINmagazine!)
This week’s winners:
- LCD Soundsystem
Why You Should Follow: Last weekend, LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy announced via the group’s website that an April 2 show at Madison Square Garden would be the last LCD concert ever. On Wednesday, two ticket presales began, and both sold out almost immediately, leaving fans desperate to score tix–and in some cases, turning to scalper sites like StubHub, which are currently selling tickets to the show at hyper-escalated prices up to $1,500. Well, this infuriated Murphy, who took to Twitter to let off some steam. “1500 for a single ticket? Fuck you, scalpers. You are parasites. I HATE you,” he ranted. “i will try to figure a way out to fuck these fuckers. NO MATTER WHAT WE DO, IT IS NOT WORTH THAT KIND OF MONEY TO SEE US!” He’s been tweeting back and forth with fans ever since he found out about the StubHub situation, reading their thoughts on the matter and brainstorming plots to seek revenge (including contacting the scalpers under a pseudonym, then meeting in person to buy the tickets and kicking their asses). Follow him to see what happens next in this battle of artist vs. scalpers–and keep following him even after the last encore song on April 2. He’s breaking up LCD Soundsystem to focus on other musical ventures, and you’ll want to be the first to know about all of those.
Best Tweet of the Week: “i’m going to go eat dinner and try not to punch a stranger in the face. thanks, everybody. #feelinglikekanye”
- The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas
Why You Should Follow: We’ve been following the Strokes’ frontman for quite awhile now, but we’ve been especially tuned in to his tweets over the past few weeks. The Strokes just released their first single in six years, “Under Cover in Darkness,” and their long-awaited fourth album, Angles, is due March 22. Casablancas has been taking advantage of his followers’ excitement about the new album, posting a couple of mock cover art images (here’s one, and here’s another… neither is real, though he did manage to trick a few gullible people). Aside from that, his Twitter feed is full of contradictions: tweets that make him seem like a very normal guy (“…and here I am, alone, in my pants, reading Robocop the novel”) and Twitpics that betray the rock star within (here, he’s playing piano with Alexis from Hot Chip in Lisbon, and here, he’s holding hands with a gorilla).
Best Tweet of the Week: “Under Cover of Darkness now available as a free download on http://www.thestrokes.com #undercoverofdarkness”
- Beach House
Why You Should Follow: Baltimore-based dream-poppers Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally–who released their third album, Teen Dream (not to be confused with Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream), last year–aren’t huge fans of Twitter. Or the Internet in general (in their eyes, it’s “just as trashy as TV”). But they do manage to keep a fairly active social media life, tweeting their way through concerts in France, Singapore, Australia, and other far-off corners of the globe, declaring their disgust for the Black Eyed Peas (“Wow, this ‘tonight’s gonna be a good night’ by black eyed peas is an epic piece of total shit, just heard it while eating and almost retched”), and giving shout-outs to fellow Baltimore acts (Lower Dens) and Sub-Pop bands (Papercuts). Expect the occasional YouTube video of a favorite French song, as well as tales of 10 a.m. debauchery, Americans “acting like jerks” in Amsterdam, and hamburgers playing drums and singing backup vocals.
Best Tweet of the Week: “dont let the internet ruin things for you”
