Terrific Twitter Trio of the Week

100903-follow-friday.jpg

Lots of musicians tweet-but all that Twitters is not gold.

That’s why you’ll want to check out SPIN.com every Friday to see whose tweets we’re reading this week-then update your TweetDeck! (Obligatory Self-Promotion: …while you’re at it, be sure to follow @SPINmagazine!)

This week’s winners:

Rihanna @rihanna
Why You Should Follow: Perhaps inspired by her friend and collaborator Kanye West-who jumped on the Twitter bandwagon at the end of July and instantly had more than 300,000 followers-Rihanna has finally joined the Twitterverse! Of course, she’s had a verified account for quite some time now, but it was full of generic news updates from her publicists-nothing personal or interesting. That’s about to change. Last Friday, she announced, “So now that i finally took over my Twitter page no more corny label tweets……lol! whaaasssuupppp ppl!!!!!” Since then, she’s shared Twitpics of her brand-new, fire engine-red hair and the view from her hotel room in Hawaii. She also gave a shout-out to R&B singer and producer Ne-Yo, said to be a collaborator on her upcoming album, and teased radio host Ryan Seacrest about the release date for her first single “Only Girl In the World.” Expect lots more from Rihanna as she gets ready to release the album, tours the world, hangs out with some of hip-hop’s biggest names, changes her hair color every few weeks, and gets a new tattoo almost as often.
Best Tweet of the Week: “@RyanSeacrest Soon! In less than 10 dayz ima send u sumn special, and ur gonna play it OVER and OVER, like I’m the only girl in the world!”

Cee-Lo @theladykilla
Why You Should Follow: Cee-Lo just released “Fuck You,” an insanely catchy number that threatens to overtake Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” as the unofficial Song of the Summer. The fun, colorful lyric video instantly went viral, and now that the official video has been released (on Twitvid, no less), the song is bound to get even more play. Cee-Lo-best known for his work with Goodie Mob and Gnarls Barkley-has a big presence on Twitter, too, even if his account isn’t yet verified. Whether he’s posting pictures of his adorable cat, Chocha, documenting his musical choices with the #nowplaying tag (he listens to everyone from Sly Stone to Serge Gainsbourg to Alice in Chains), or giving his take on R. Kelly’s “Trapped in the Closet” saga, his tweets offer a tiny glimpse into his day-to-day life. His Twitpics of ridiculous headwear and even more ridiculous Photoshop efforts are especially worth looking out for.
Best Tweet of the Week: “Everybody say ‘FUCK U CEELO!’ Its the twitter u love to hate!”

Jenny Lewis @jennylewis
Why You Should Follow: Rilo Kiley’s adorable, cowboy boot-wearing frontwoman recently teamed up with her equally adorable boyfriend, Johnathan Rice, to release an album of adorable duets called I’m Having Fun Now. Now they’ve hit the road together for the first time, and Jenny has finally started to tweet more, posting promo videos for their opening act, Farmer Dave Scher, and links to album reviews and other Jenny & Johnny-related news (including SPIN’s tour of the couple’s pad). Though most of her tweets are pretty impersonal, there are moments where the real Jenny shines through-like when she apologizes to Barack and Michelle Obama, saying that they can’t come to the Jenny & Johnny show in D.C. because it’s all sold out, and invites them to come to the after-party at Ben’s Chili Bowl instead.
Best Tweet of the Week: “thanks to everyone who came to our first show ever at three of clubs last night. and thanks to that dude with the cambodian rum.”
