Terrific Twitter Trio of the Week

Lots of musicians tweet – but all that Twitters is not gold.

That’s why you’ll want to check out SPIN.com every Friday to see whose tweets we’re reading this week – then update your TweetDeck! (Obligatory Self-Promotion: …while you’re at it, be sure to follow @SPINmagazine!)

  • Drake
    @drakkardnoir

    Why You Should Follow: The hip-hop artist just released his debut full-length album, Thank Me Later, and has such a huge fan base that a riot broke out at his free concert at New York City’s South Street Seaport on Tuesday. In spite of the craziness, Drake remains a beacon of calm on Twitter. His Yoda-like wisdom (“I’d rather be an optimist who is sometimes wrong than a pessimist who is always right”) and musings about life and love (“When a young man complains that a young lady has no heart, it’s pretty certain that she has his”) have earned him quite the following online, with more than 700,000 followers. Expect plenty of advice (“Just smile and smell good”) and greeting card-worthy sentiments (“Today is just a good day in disguise”).

    Best Tweet of the Week: “I am so disappointed. To all the devoted fans that came out I wish you could have seen what I had planned! Until next time,” after Tuesday’s riot, which shut down the concert.

  • Wavves
    @wavveswavves

    Why You Should Follow: This lo-fi noise-pop band from California has had a troubled year. Last June, lead singer Nathan Williams broke down onstage in Barcelona, having taken a cocktail of Xanax, Ecstasy, and Valium before the show. Drummer Ryan Ulsh ended up leaving the band, and their European tour was cut short. Just a few months later, Williams got into a bar brawl with the Black Lips’ Jared Swilley, earning more bad press. But it seems like things are finally turning around for the band. Their upcoming album, King of the Beach, is one of the most anticipated releases of the summer, and Williams has reportedly cleaned up his act (though tweets about ‘shrooms and acid might suggest otherwise). Follow them as they get ready to hit the road (“just got metal gear solid: peace walker and legend of zelda: spirit tracks for psp and ds. now i’m ready to tour”), re-tweet Jersey Shore‘s @Sn00ki and @justinbieber, and post Twitpics of creepy dolls and self-made alien tattoos.

    Best Tweet of the Week: “OKAY LET ME EXPLAIN.. WE KNO ALIENS EXIST WE NEED IT 2 B PUBLIC SO WE NEED A REAL LIFE ALIEN 2 REPRESENT WAVVES @ A SHOW BRING HIM 2 US”

  • Sara Bareilles
    @SaraBareilles

    Why You Should Follow: This singer-songwriter’s tweets are just as adorable as her love songs (and the cotton candy pink background on her Twitter page). Whether she’s tweeting about dancing with Lady Gaga in her dreams (“Neighborhood bar- she wore no makeup and called me bareilles. Life was good”), getting the munchies (“Why is late night fast food so good then so bad but so good then so bad but so good but so bad but seriously so good but so horribly bad”), or people-watching at the beach, she keeps things funny and sweet. Follow her as she gets ready to release her third album, Kaleidoscope Heart, tries unsuccessfully to navigate new forms of social media (“Am i the only one confused about the whole 4square thing? I don’t want to know the mayor of Burger King”), and shares some of her favorite songs with the world (like Dr. Dog’s cover of the Architecture In Helsinki song “Heart It Races”).

    Best Tweet of the Week: “Worst turbulence EVER on my flight home. Almost spilled my jack and coke. I would’ve filed a suit.”
