Watch Tegan and Sara Stump for Marriage Equality With Pink-Lit ‘Leno’ Set

SPIN cover stars Tegan and Sara resumed their tour of the talk show circuit last night (April 11) by bringing “Closer” — the lead single from Essential seventh album, Heartthrob — to The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. Even after months of persistent promotion (the Canadian two-piece weren’t shy about reaching for Top 40 glory on their latest LP), “Closer” still thrills with its irrepressible rhythm and buoyant refrain. What makes this performance truly unique, though, is how Tegan and Sara proudly rep for same-sex marriage by lighting and decorating their stage show to reference the Human Rights Campaign’s red and pink equal sign. Suddenly, a line like “Here come the dreams of you and me,” speaks to an ambition greater than pop chart success.
