Girls just wanted to have fun., and so the HBO show had the New York band deliver a new song, "Sight of the Sun" on Monday. Before that, Santigold repped hard for girls (in general) and Girls (the series) by going in on an exclusive track called "Girls." Now, with far less potential for exasperating wordplay, Tegan and Sara have shared their cover of the Rolling Stones' "Fool to Cry," recorded for Girls – Volume 1: Music from the HBO Original Series, a two-disc set which came out this week.
To Mick and co.'s minimal, synth-powered ballad, the Quin twins add their brightly harmonizing vocals, crisp drum support, a few layers of guitar, and, yes, more synth (thanks in part to producer RAC). Revisit the original after hearing the T&S take and it suddenly seems like it's missing something, like that StSanders guy stripped the performance of its original track and an errant burst of shred will arrive at any second. In other words, well played, ladies. Tegan and Sara, of course, have a new album out this month, the so-far highly promising Heartthrob, and Girls kicks off its second season on Sunday, January 13.
