Nominations for the 70th Annual Golden Globes were announced Thursday morning (December 13) and Taylor Swift, Adele, and Jon Bon Jovi are all vying for the Best Original Song statuette. Swift’s bleary-eyed ballad for The Hunger Games, “Safe & Sound,” faces off against “Skyfall,” Adele’s retro Bond theme for the film of the same name. Jon Bon Jovi’s down-but-not-out number “Not Running Anymore,” from the Al Pacino-starring Stand Up Guys was also named, alongside country star Keith Urban’s “For You,” featured in the action flick Act of Valor and “Suddenly,” a song written exclusively for the upcoming film version of Les Misérables.

Notable snubs include Fiona Apple for “Dull Tool,” her contribution to the This Is 40 soundtrack, and every original song from Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained.

Though the Golden Globes are generally regarded as a forecast of what will happen at the Academy Awards, that hasn’t always been the case in recent years. Madonna won the Best Original Song Globe last year for “Masterpiece,” which appeared in her directorial debut W.E., but the MDNA singer wasn’t nominated for an Oscar. Instead, only two songs competed for a trophy in 2012, with Flight of the Conchords’ Bret McKenzie ultimately winning for his Muppets song “Man or Muppet.” The same situation played out in 2011: Cher’s “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me,” from Burlesque, won Best Song that year, but failed to earn a nod come Oscar time.

In 2009, though, Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett’s “The Weary Kind,” the theme to country music drama Crazy Heart, collected the Best Original Song trophies at both the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards. Burnett now has a shot at another Song Globe, thanks to his work on Swift’s “Safe & Sound,” but the Hunger Games track doesn’t have a chance of grabbing an Oscar next year, since it was left off the Academy’s “Best Original Song” short list. Adele, Bon Jovi, Urban, and Hugh Jackman (who sings “Suddenly” in Les Misérables) all landed a spot in the Oscars nomination pool.

The 70th Annual Golden Globes will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and will broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 13 at 8 p.m. EST on NBC. Hear four of the nominees — and a behind-the-scenes featurette focused on “Suddenly,” since Les Mis doesn’t open until December 25 — below.
