Acknowledging that the bands and records we love — and the culture and ethos that swirl around them — might actually be kind of trivial doesn't mean you love them any less. In a way, it means you love them all the more irrationally. That's the wisdom behind the instant-classic opening line from Superchunk's "Me & You & Jackie Mittoo," off their great new album I Hate Music: "I hate music / What is it worth? / Can't bring anyone back to this earth." The video superimposes shots of people holding up albums against footage of a snowy evening, until we see cut-outs of all these folks and their records together (à la Sgt. Pepper's), and then a passionate performance from Superchunk themselves. Directed by Phil Morrison (Oscar-nominated 2005 film Junebug, Yo La Tengo's "I'll Be Around"), the clip won't reverse death, but it'll make the next two minutes of your life better. Although music has its limits, stretching them can be a thing of beauty.
