Strokes Start Recording in New York Studio!

It's good news for rock fans: The Strokes have begun recording their new album at New York City's Avatar Studios. The yet untitled release will be the quintet's first since 2007's First Impressions of Earth.

In a post to their website, the bandmembers confirmed that they're working with Grammy award winning producer Joe Chiccarelli (White Stripes, Beck, Bjork, My Morning Jacket) and engineer Gus Oberg (Bloc Party) on their fourth studio LP, and promise to document the process in "video vignettes."

So what should fans expect from the Strokes' big comeback album? Well, in a recent Q&A with SPIN, singer Julian Casablancas said the band certainly have something to prove.

"We got to the top of the underground, but we never got as big as Green Day or Creed or any of the bands we were supposed to be replacing in 2001," he explained. "So, in my mind, here's still a step to take. I hope we can do it."

And so do we -- but it sounds like it won't be easy. Casablancas admitted in a different interview that the boys were in "disagreement as to whether the songs are ready."

He added, "We're not like people who go to the movies together. It's weird with the band, a band is actually a great way to ruin a friendship."

Then, in a New York Magazine feature, Casablancas -- who recently released the SPIN-approved solo effort Phrazes for the Young -- raised another problem: "We split the money… but we didn't split the work," he said.

The quintet is slated to headline both the Isle of Wright and Rockness 2010 festivals in the UK early this June.

@JimmyM
1) If you're referring to payola it's the labels that do that, not the bands or artists.
2) The Strokes never actually got that much radio play or even sold that many records so your points are completely moot. Compare their album sales to all those Fall Out Boys / Green Days / etc... They are still an underground band.
3) They paid DJs with coke? Please provide evidence of this. You seem to know a lot about a band you claim to hate.

I see a lot of you have no idea how the music business works. Nobody plays music on the radio that the band didn't pay to get on. Why do you all think so many good bands out there that blow away the Strokes don't get any airplay? Because they have no money to buy coke for DJ's. If you think it's good, no problem, but make no mistake...they would be nothing if they didn't buy their way onto the charts. Nobody would. Ain't a single artist on the radio who got there without paying. Songs are no more highly regarded than commercials. Pay for airtime and you can get any song you want on the radio. Wonder why their last album stiffed? Sounds to me like they got ****y and decided they didn't need to buy coke for DJ's anymore. Bet they won't make that mistake this time.

Sorry but I'm so sick of all you haters that keep yapping about Julian's dad somehow buying their success...

1) Julian's parents divorced at a young age and he was raised by his mom

2) LISTEN carefully to Julian's raw song demos and compare them to the finals. Tell me you've written better songs. If you have, you wouldn't be wasting your time putting down one of the most meticulous, hardest working songwriters today. Look up on youtube: I'll Try Anything Once / You Only Live Once... Left & Right in the Dark (demo) and the final for starters.

It's who you are now and what you've done for yourself, not what you were born into, or who your parents are.

I adore "Is This It", and then had tepid feelings toward "Room" and "Impressions". Interestingly, the fact that I enjoyed "Phrazes" so much allowed me to go back and revisit them, and I think I have a greater appreciation for them now.

julians dad being rich has nothing to do with their success there is a reason their DEBUT album is considered the best album of the decade by a lot of credible sources quit hating their one band unlike green day and creed that's actually talented.

I read from another website that the band are more of a team than ever. Nice to know. I listened to the Strokes and liked their music before I knew Julian's dad owned a famous modelling company. Either way, that did not affect their sound. Unless I can be proven otherwise, then I think Julian is more known to be the lead singer of the Strokes than the son of some famous rich guy.

Hey, I just noticed that the guy on the right is blowing smoke out of his mouth. How cool! Is that the guy who banged Drew Barrymore? Wow, he must be a musical genius the way he blows smoke out of his mouth!

Gee, isn't that great? This band of untalented schmucks is doing a new album! Hip hip hooray! If not for Julian Casablancas' daddy, who owns one of the world's largest modeling agencies, hadn't bought their way into the music business, they'd be playing open mic nights at crap bars for free. Can't wait for the new album, boys!

"We split the money… but we didn't split the work,"

you'd think that since julian casablancas whines incessantly when he sings he could take a break from whining when he's talking, but nope, he does it then too.

Thank God. It's time for them to be back. Hope they go on for another twenty years plus...
