After roaring back to life on their 14th album Accelerate in 2008, R.E.M. continue their groove on their latest disc Collapse Into Now. The album doesn’t drop until next Tuesday, but you can stream the LP in its entirety over at NPR.
Collapse Into Now finds R.E.M. gloriously waking themselves from their mid-life slumber. In SPIN’s rave review, Josh Modell writes, “They discover the glow of middle age, warmly acknowledging the past – hello again, Peter Buck’s mandolin – while realizing that the present can feel just as comforting.”
Highlights of Collapse include the pretty “Uberlin,” which recalls classic tunes like “Drive,” while heavier tracks like “Discoverer” and “All the Best” mine the sexy crunch of ’90s-era albums like Monster. R.E.M. have also called upon their best rock pals to join in the fun: check out “Walk it Back,” which features guest spots from Eddie Vedder and Patti Smith.
