Madlib Rolls Out Psych-Rock Beats on ‘Black Dreams (Sludge Fight)’

Stream New Madlib Rock Konducta

Elusive Los Angeles beat-genius Madlib has shared a new taste from his ongoing Rock Konducta project, the fifth chapter (each divided into two volumes) in his ongoing Beat Konducta series. Heard below, “Black Dreams (Sludge Fight),” showcases Otis Jackson Jr.’s masterful command of recorded sound, as he tames fuzzy guitar-noise and wailing vocals into a composition of calculated flow. Madlib, who once joined studio-forces with rap deity J Dilla, promises an artful fusion of hip-hop production and the raw rock’n’roll, sampling everything “from American psychedelia to Germany’s Krautrock to acid-soaked Spanish prog to synthy, early-’80s oddities” for this collection of over 50 instrumentals.

Madlib released Rock Konducta Pt. 1 on vinyl earlier this year, and you can expect wax for Rock Konducta Pt. 2 on July 8. The combined Rock collection will be available on CD and digitally on July 15, courtesy of the artist’s own Madlib Invazion. Read our exclusive interview with the maestro here, and if you’re still sleeping on his street-rap epic with Freddie Gibbs, it’s time to wake up.
