Can You Spot the Radiohead in Steve Reich’s ‘Kid A’-Inspired ‘Radio Rewrite’?

Steve Reich, Thom Yorke

Radiohead fans, here’s your mission, if you choose to accept it. Steve Reich, the hugely influential modern composer, saw his Radiohead-inspired piece, “Radio Rewrite,” premiere earlier this week in the very capable hands of the London Sinfonietta. Kid A‘s “Everything in Its Right Place” and In Rainbows‘ “Jigsaw Falling Into Place” sparked the composer’s work, he has saidWhat you’ll want to do is listen to the intricate 20-minute piece and see how it reflects and expands upon Radiohead’s originals. We’re pretty sure we detect a hint of “Everything in Its Right Place” in the jagged section around the 21:30 mark; see what else you can find. Also worth noting: Reich has praised Jonny Greenwood’s guitar playing, and in fact, live video of the Radiohead guitarist covering Reich’s “Electric Counterpoint” also surfaced recently.

Listen to “Radio Rewrite” here; an interview with Reich starts around the two-minute mark, and the music begins around the five-minute mark. The stream is slated to expire on March 12. So if you wait too long, you might wake up sucking on a lemon.
