Watch the Stepkids’ Amazingly Cornball ‘Moving Pictures’ Video

the stepkids, moving pictures, troubadour

In a recent interview with SPIN, the Stepkids had some difficulty explaining the inspiration behind “Moving Pictures,” a goofball-funk number featured on the trio’s new album. “When you look back at a memory, it’s like a painting,” said singer-guitarist Jeff Gitelman. “That’s what moving pictures are: It’s a set of images actually moving. They aren’t still-life, because if a memory is still-life, then the present is kind of moving. So it’s like moving still-life pictures. It’s hard to explain.”

Similarly tough to discern is the song’s music video, which just premiered on PureVolume. Directed by Henry Demaio, the clip doubles down on the Connecticut crew’s yacht-rock aesthetic. Decked out in white blazers and solid color T-shirts, the Stepkids strut through their rewarding brand of white-man’s-overbite-funk while a cheeseball blue screen transports them to a few different locations. Look, there’s the Stepkids performing on a beach! Now they’re in a patch of desert! Oh, and there they are playing their instruments while floating in the sky! There’s also a group of scientists lighting a giant joint.

The clip also co-stars comedian Kyle Mooney, who joins the cast of Saturday Night Live this season and enjoyed a brilliantly dweeby part on NBC’s Parks and Recreation a couple of years back. As for the Stepkids, they’ve got a slew of tour dates lined up in support of their recently released Troubadour LP. Find details below and stream the entire record here at SPIN.
