Anticipation for 2013’s Record Store Day (April 20) keeps building as more and more information on the annual vinyl holiday leaks. SPIN has previously reported on Record Store Day’s new ambassador (Jack White), official film selection (Last Shop Standing), and several exclusive music releases. Now Pitchfork points to another treat specifically crafted for analog nerds: Stephen Malkmus’ album-length cover of Can’s 1972 classic Ege Bamyasi.

The set was recorded live back in December, during Week-End Fest in Cologne, Germany, with local band Von Spar backing the Jicks leader. As SPIN’s Marc Hogan noted at the time, “It’s a thrill to see such an oft-geeked-out-about indie rocker playing some of the strange music he has geeked out to for so long, and the influence of the German prog-rockers’ free-flowing, dissociative approach on Pavement’s records is clear — though part of what’s fun here is hearing Malkmus get funky.”

Malkmus’ take on Ege Bamyasi will be pressed on green vinyl, limited to 3,500 copies, and distributed by Matador in the United States. Domino will handle red vinyl editions for Europe. Scroll down to watch video of Malkmus performing Can’s “One More Night.”
