President Obama’s State of the Union Address Gets Lucky With 2014 Grammy Memes

President Barack Obama State of the Union address Grammy memes

Music didn’t get an explicit shout-out at last night’s State of the Union address, unlike TV’s Mad Men. But Music’s Biggest Night was very much in mind on social media. Sort of like how Macklemore & Ryan Lewis technically “won” at the Grammys but Kendrick Lamar was the victor in spirit — except not at all like that, because President Obama was talking about Serious Policy Stuff with consequences for millions of Americans — the unheralded star of the 2014 State of the Union was… the 2014 Grammys. Twitter denizens were quick to Photoshop Grammy Album of the Year winners Daft Punk‘s helmets and the robot duo’s Record of the Year collaborator Pharrell’s hat into shots of the POTUS, the also-memeable Vice President Joe Biden, and Executive Spray Tan Party spokesman House Speaker John Boehner (who really needs to do something new so his memes won’t be all Oompa Loompas and crocodile tears). Check out a couple of choice examples via The Hollywood Reporter below. And, on a more serious note, revisit Obama’s comments on the passing of Pete Seeger, whom he described, echoing Studs Terkel, as “America’s tuning fork.”
