Watch Spoon Perform a Stripped-Down ‘Rent I Pay’ in an Acoustic Session

Spoon Rent I Pay They Want My Soul Acoustic Video

Spoon’s forthcoming album They Want My Soul is due to hit stores on August 5 via Loma Vista, but until then they’re gearing up with a handful of tour dates, including Saturday night at the Toronto festival NXNE. While there, Britt Daniel stopped by the radio station Indie88 for a stripped down performance of the band’s recent single “Rent I Pay.”

Though the track’s fairly basic even in its studio incarnation, Daniel’s reedy vocalizations and driving acoustic guitar are only accompanied here by some spare additions by guitarist Eric Harvey. The band’s taut instrumentals are always stretched even tighter in acoustic performances, but here they’ve stripped the tune to its basest kernel in the name of allowing Daniel’s knotty lyricism and restrained emoting to break through the track’s otherwise clean-cut exterior.

You can watch video of the performance above while you continue the long wait for their eighth studio LP.
