Atlanta, GA singer/songwriter Shannon Wright has always marched to the beat of her own drum, er, guitar, and whatever else the experimental chanteuse has taken up playing. With over a decade in the biz, the former Crowsdell frontwoman remains one of indie rock’s finest, and it’s her emotional sincerity and earnest simplicity — especially found on albums such as 1999’s Flightsafety and 2001’s Dyed in the Wool — that has allowed Wright to firmly plant herself among the genre’s fickle state of mind. With Let in the Light, Wright’s sixth solo outing due May 8 on the Chicago-based Quarterstick imprint, Wright finally gives it up and the metallic clamor of “St. Pete” proves it; Replete with surefire guitar riffs, back-to-basics drum beats, and Wright’s sharp wit, this three-minute pop gem matches the casual confidence of Mary Timony and Kristin Hersh. “St. Pete” is a mere glimpse at her pensive, imaginative mindset, and a clue to her most revealing set of songs to date, however, Wright still manages to keep things a bit secretive without catering to melodrama — take that Cat Power!
