Smashing Pumpkins March to War in ‘Drum and Fife’ Video

Smashing Pumpkins

The Smashing Pumpkins have released a brand-new video for “Drum and Fife,” which is taken from their latest release, Monuments to an Elegy. Directed by Ahlander + Antiga, the clip features a group of kids playing war games in the desert, until their innocent-seeming play is cut short by actual adult violence. Commenting in a press release, Billy Corgan said the following of the video:

I asked, albeit in an allegorical way, for the video to represent what our returning soldiers are going through with PTSD, and I feel that the directors captured that with poignancy. I couldn’t be more proud of the message we’re sending that we care what happens to those that are out there hurting.

In addition to their new visual, Corgan & Co. have announced a series of TV appearances to air this week, including spots on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on April 2 (featuring the Killers’ Mark Stoermer on bass and Rage Against the Machine’s Brad Wilk on drums), and, on the morning of April 3, they’ll play an acoustic rendition of the same track on Good Morning America. Watch “Drum and Fife” above, and look out for the band’s live performances this week.
