Six Organs of Admittance Offer ‘Shelter’

The cold and the rain couldn’t keep Ben Chasny’s fans away fromthe cozy Mohawk bar last night (Jan. 17). Red River’s hottest huntinglodge-cum-hipster haven was packed with Austin audiophiles in theirthickest sweatshirts and homemade scarves there to trip into theintimate psych rock sounds of Six Organs of Admittance. A solo BenChasny got the show underway with his acoustic guitar and a small armyof effect pedals. Playing new tunes “Alone With The Alone” and “Jadeand Wine” — both included on his latest studio offering, Shelter From the Ash — he seamlessly transitioned between melodic finger picking and walls of garage-worthy sound.

Next up, Chasny switched to his electric guitar and brought Magik Markersguitar maven Elisa Ambrogio on stage. Together, the two created aperfect musical storm that was electrifying to experience. Chasny livedup to his reputation as a guitar virtuoso while Ambrogio pulled out allthe tricks from metal-worthy shredding to playing her electric like alap steel. Bodies swaying, fingers flashing, the dueling guitarsravished each other, highlighted by Chasny’s passionately raw lyrics.By the time they wrapped up the show with “Home,” the instruments hadcome alive, screaming and wailing along with their masters.

We asked:Ben Chasny has quite an impressive rock resume. In addition to SixOrgans of Admittance, he has worked with Comets on Fire, Magik Markers,Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Badgerlore and more. What is your favoriteChasny project and why?
